Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an essential layer of cybersecurity protection to North Carolina educator and staff accounts in NCEdCloud.

Statewide Staff MFA Mandate

Beginning July 1, 2026, the statewide NCEdCloud MFA requirement applies to staff users. Staff members must register and maintain an approved multi-factor authentication method.

Supported Authentication Mechanisms

  • TOTP Authenticator Apps (Default): Time-based one-time passcodes generated by a TOTP-capable authenticator (such as RapidIdentity Authenticator, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or another compliant TOTP app).
  • WebAuthn / FIDO2 (Supported Alternative): Physical security keys (YubiKey), platform authenticators (Windows Hello, Touch ID), and passkeys.
